Frida Kahlo has been such an inspiration in my life but probably not for the reasons you imagine. My grandfather was a advocate for the arts and believed that education was the key to understanding and advancement in life. He was “of the times” for being Hispanic and growing up surrounded in a strict culture. He was never afraid to voice his opinion (now you know where I get that from -lol), fight for what he thought was right, and give to people in need in many ways.
When my grandfather passed, instead of flowers he requested donations to provide a scholarship to kids for the art and music camps provided at his local museum, The Brownsville Museum of Fine Art. The museum hosted a honorary event for him and it just so happened to coincide with the Frida Kahlo exhibit. Talk about a match made in heaven! Two people that faced adversity, challenges being Mexican doing business in America, and two people that still no matter what happened to them kept their hearts open to the world.
Frida is one of those artists that just speaks to me! When I look into her paintings I can feel the emotions behind every stroke. PAINTING WITH A TWIST was hosting a Paint Frida on her Birthday Event and knew I had to attend. Painting her brought back so many memories of my grandfather but also when I think of her I remember to never give up on my passions and embrace my uniqueness.
For the Frida Birthday Event, I invited one of my close friends to attend and we had a great time. PAINTING WITH A TWIST has always been a great place for a special event (like this night), a Date Night, company outing, or even a Girls Night Out. Not to mention, its BYOB and of course, we didn’t forget the vino. These classes are so much fun and are for artists of every level and this was included kids. It’s really interesting to see how different everyone’s painting turns out when given the same instruction.
Here is the wall at my house were Frida joined my other PAINTING WITH A TWIST beauties!
Frida is a woman that despite everything she went through she never lost her heart, her originality, embraced her strangeness, and emotional sense that made her who she was. She secretly keeps me motivated and encouraged because she faced so many things and never gave up. “I used to think I was the strangest person in the world but then I thought there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me, too. Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it’s true I’m here, and I’m just as strange as you.” Frida Kahlo | Here I am Frida, thinking of you! – Val
